The Commander’s Cup

Commanders Cup TrophyThe Commander’s Cup is an annual tradition of friendly competition between units that occurs on American military bases worldwide. Service Members participate in a variety of intramural league sports and golf tournaments throughout the year to earn points for their units. At the end of the season, the unit with the most points takes the Commander’s Cup trophy home. This competition, not to be confused with our annual golf tournament of the same name, is a conspicuous way for Service Members to burn off stress, enjoy some down time and build camaraderie.

The competition consists of five sports; soccer, basketball, flag football, softball and golf and points are awarded based on the number of teams that participate. So in a field of eight teams, first place is awarded eight points, second receives seven and so on down to last place earning one point. If your unit doesn’t compete in that sport, no points are awarded.

The current standings for Cherry Point have MWCS-28 in the lead by just one point over the Naval Health Clinic. VMU-2 and ATC Maintenance are tied for 3rd with basketball and softball seasons now complete. Flag football season is happening now with soccer on deck. No teams competed in golf this year, a missed chance for some easy points. All units still have a shot at winning the trophy as the standings can change dramatically at the close of each season.

During 2019 we had a total of 54 teams representing 22 units in the 5 sports played.
