So many times, when I ask Marines or Sailors what services are available to them in the Education Office, they say “Tuition Assistance”. My response “That is right, but do you know about all the other things we can help you with”? The answer is usually “no”. There is an assumption out there that all we do is Tuition Assistance (TA), but that is far from the truth. While we know how important TA is and we are happy to have money to assist Marines with paying for college, we also want you to know about the other education programs available from us.
We offer education and career advisement for active duty, dependents, retirees, and civilians. So, if you are stumped on what type of education to get started on, or what career will be right for you, set up an appointment to sit down with an Education Specialist.
We can also help you with additional funding options for college in addition to TA. We can provide information on scholarships, grants, loans, how to use your GI Bill, and even testing options that are worth college credit. Speaking of testing, we have numerous exams including college entrance exams, military classification, certification, interest inventories, as well as proctoring services.
Have you ever heard of the United Services Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP)? This program provides active duty members the opportunity to receive a Department of Labor Certificate in the area of their MOS. All you do is log the hours that you do every day on your job, and after you accomplish the required hours, you get a certificate saying you are qualified to do that job in the civilian sector. Why would you want to do this you ask? It gives you a competitive edge and it will allow you to start a job with documented experience (this usually means more pay)! If you come by the Education Office, one of our Education Technicians can provide you with more information, and help you enroll.
There are many more services we offer and I hope you get the chance to take advantage of them. I will provide you with a quick breakdown; however, if you would like additional information on any of our programs, please feel free to call us at 252-466-3500. We provide official and unofficial copies of the Joint Services Transcript (JST), and can help make any corrections or updates that are needed to the document. If you need assistance in the academic skills areas of reading, mathematics and/or communicating and writing, you can enroll in the Military Academic Skills Pro-gram (MASP), an on-duty education program. Our Leadership Scholar Program (LSP) can help Service members gain admission to over 200 top colleges around the country. There are certain requirements that must be met in order to participate in LSP.
I don’t want to forget to mention that family members, civilians, and retirees also have access to many of our services including, financial aid information, certain testing programs, and as mentioned above, education and career planning.
Please stop by and visit us in the Jerry Marvel Training & Education Building, Room 109. While you are here, you can also visit our schools aboard the installation, Craven Community College, Park University, Southern Illinois University, and Boston University, to learn about the degree and certification options they have available.
