A Look Back at 2015

From coastal shark attacks to Pedro’s sad departure, 2015 has been a heck-of-a year for us here at Cherry Point. Here’s a quick look back at some MCCS events from 2015.

We had several family events including two free family movie nights at Two Rivers Theater. We loved seeing your little ones dressed up as their favorite Frozen and Despicable Me characters. We brought ECU School of Theater and Dance aboard to present two free plays. Treasure Island came to life with swashbuckling pirates in March and you had a chance to reconnect with the lovable Velveteen Rabbit in October. Your children also had the opportunity to catch fish during our annual Take a Kid Fishing event. We’re certain some good fishing tales emerged from that steamy morning at the pond. In April, we celebrated with an Egg-citing Easter event at Miller’s Landing including a wild egg hunt and delicious champagne brunch. The library’s summer reading program kicked off in June, and in July we recognized your volunteerism with our Red, White and You event. The awesome 2D MAW Party Band set the tone for the night, which included free food and other giveaways as well as a live performance from local favorite, Bryan Mayer. Your young athletes got to participate in Hook a Kid on Golf, the Kids Sprint Tri and our Professional Soccer Camps. The kids got to meet and learn from Soccer Pros Brek Shea, Carli Lloyd and Ashlyn Harris. Your children may have competed in one of our Lego Building Contests hosted at the Main Exchange or got to meet Francesca Capaldi during our Back to School Event. A few lucky kids got to participate in our stylish Fashion Show. All in all, we tried to keep your kids pretty busy!

We offered several events exclusively for spouses including our ever popular Spouses Exploration Day and Spouses Spa Day. Operation Ball Gown is always a big hit and we know so many of you appreciated the beautiful, free gowns and giveaways.

Our live music events included For the Leathernecks IV, Rocktoberfest and Guitar Pull. Thousand Foot Krutch rocked the theater along with the Carolina Honey bees and live comedy during For the Leathernecks. October saw Rocktoberest featuring Devour the Day, First Decree and Switchfoot. You enjoyed some delicious free food, beverage tasting and some interesting aerial performances from Smash Studios. Finally, the annual WRNS Guitar Pull is always a special night featuring live, acoustic performances from up and coming country music artists.

For our runners, cyclers and other adrenaline lovers, we held the Half Marathon in March and the Sprint Tri in August. A couple events got rained out but we’re looking forward to a drier 2016. Our All Terrain Unit Competition is always a blast with units competing for prize money in a variety of obstacles and conditions. Congrats to two-time champs MALS-14! We opened up the Devil Dog Dare on Saturdays for you to feel the rush as you zipline through the forest along and over part of Slocum creek. You can Free Fall from 60 feet or challenge your friends at our paintball park. You also had the chance to compete in four different golf tournaments hosted at the gorgeous Sound of Freedom Golf Course.

Our holiday events are always popular and we appreciate support from FedEx for delivering 420 live trees to our Trees for Troops event and the USO for the Home Front Harvest. The holiday season would not be complete without a quick visit with Santa at our annual Tree Lighting or by attending the 2D MAW Band’s holiday concert at the theater. Our Single Marine Program provided both Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to more than 400 Service Members who could not be home for the holidays. You made our Angel Tree program successful with over 280 gift donations for Cherry Point Active Duty families in need.

These were just a few of our events that we feel especially proud of and we’re looking forward to a fantastic 2016. Best of luck to you and your family whether you’re stationed here a bit longer or have orders to another installation. We strive to help make your time aboard MCAS Cherry Point safe, fun and memorable!

Happy New Year from MCCS Cherry Point!
